Frequently Asked Questions

  • We hear this often! It sounds radical because we are all so used to the traditional grind. But there is no magic here—just a very intentional redesign of the day. By stepping outside the traditional system, we remove the busywork, the crowded rooms, and the rigid bell schedules. When you combine a capped cohort of 14 students, expert-led mentorship, and Mastery Over Minutes, children can actually learn deeply and finish all of their work during the day. It is completely real, and it is the exact supportive studio space your family needs to take your evenings back.

The Daily Rhythm & The "Done" Promise

  • We are a boutique daytime workspace and micro-school for independent learners in Grades 3-8. Think of us as the "Third Way" between traditional public school and traditional homeschooling. You are legally a homeschooling family, but your child spends their day in our studio under the guidance of our Expert Mentors.

  • No homework. Ever. We make a "Done" Promise to our families: 100% of academic and project work is finished within our walls. When your child leaves the studio, their work day is entirely over so your family evenings remain your own.

  • We designed our schedule as A Rhythm for Real Life, keeping commuter families in mind.

    • 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM | The Soft Start: A flexible arrival window to accommodate your morning commute.

    • 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Morning Mastery: Focused time for core academic progress.

    • 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM | Explore Afternoons: Science, engineering, and arts guided by an Expert in Residence.

    • 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM | The Studio Beyond: A supervised creative workspace where students can stay safely engaged until your workday ends.

  • No. We know that real life includes family travel, illness, and mental health days. Attendance is entirely flexible. Your monthly tuition pays for your child’s secure spot in our small cohort and their access to the studio, regardless of their physical presence on any given day. Because every student works at their own pace, they will never "fall behind" if they miss a day.

  • No. While they use their digital curriculum for core skills (like math and reading) so they can move at their own self-directed pace, the rest of the day is highly collaborative. We step away from the screens for hands-on passion projects, monthly "Sprints," Socratic discussions, and real-world exploration.

  • We don't have "classes." We have a single, mixed-age cohort strictly capped at 14 students. This ensures your child is deeply known, mentored as an individual, and never lost in the crowd.

  • Because we maintain a small cohort of students seats are highly limited. A $750 tuition prepayment secures your child's seat in the studio. This is not an extra fee; it is directly applied to your final tuition installment in May.

  • Our tuition is structured as an annual payment that is divided into a 10-month installment plan. We offer two enrollment tiers designed to support your life, giving you the exact level of coverage your household needs:

    • Standard Horizon: This tier provides full access to the studio from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Your monthly installment covers the Mastery Portfolio and a fully provisioned studio. If you are ever delayed in traffic, Standard Horizon families have access to a daily drop-in for The Studio Beyond until 6:00 PM. This guarantees that your child always has a safe, productive place to be.

    • Extended Horizon: This tier includes everything in the Standard model, plus full access to The Studio Beyond from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. This provides a supervised, creative workspace where students can stay safely engaged until your workday ends.

  • Legally, families enroll as homeschoolers. However, many of our families utilize California charter school funds to completely or partially cover the cost of our studio tuition and their chosen curriculum. It is much easier than it sounds! We have created a simple guide explaining exactly how this works.

  • We believe in 100% financial transparency. You can download our full Studio Guide here to see our exact monthly installment rates, what is included, and how it compares to standard private school costs.

Enrollment & Tuition

Commuter Realities & Connection

  • We provide a built-in Commuter Safety Net. If you are delayed in traffic, your child is safe and supervised. Our studio remains open until 6:00 PM. If you are on our Standard tier (2:30 PM pickup), you can simply utilize our $50 daily drop-in rate for extended care without any stress, guilt, or late fees.

  • We respect your need to stay connected with your child. We don't ban phones; instead, we use Dock Mode. Phones stay in the student’s Personal Hub during work blocks to protect their focus. However, students may step to their Hub to call or text home at any time without asking permission.

Studio Logistics (Food & Tech)

  • Students bring a packed, ready-to-eat lunch from home each day. We take our lunch break from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM. (Please note: to maximize our break time, we ask that lunches do not require microwaving or staff prep). The studio also stays stocked with healthy supplemental snacks to keep their growing brains fueled throughout the day!

  • No. Studio Chromebooks are provided for all students. Your child only needs to bring a set of headphones with a built-in microphone (standard 3.5mm jack or USB-C).

  • We do not use detentions or referrals. Instead, we maintain a 'Low-Drama Zone.' Because our cohort is capped at 14 students, we actually know your child. We treat them as capable members of a shared workspace and focus on solving problems together rather than handing out arbitrary punishments.

  • Instead of asking who is to blame, we ask: What happened? Who was affected? What do we need to do to make things right? We use a tiered response:

    • Level 1—Redirection: A private, 1-on-1 talk to identify the issue and find a collaborative solution.

    • Level 2—Reflection: If a behavior continues, the student loses unstructured time to complete a written plan on how their actions impacted the group and how they will fix it.

    • Level 3—Sabbatical: For severe or repeated disruptions, a student takes a 2-day temporary leave for a home reset, followed by a parent meeting to build an Individualized Care Plan.

  • We replace the anxiety of traditional report cards with Real-Time Transparency. You have direct access to a digital dashboard where you can see exactly which concepts your child has mastered at any given moment. No more waiting for a parent-teacher conference in November to find out your child has been struggling with math since September.

Tracking Progress & Accountability

Transitioning to the Studio

  • t is a much simpler process than traditional school districts want you to believe. To transition into our studio, you simply choose one of two administrative pathways: joining a local independent study charter or filing a 5-minute Private School Affidavit (PSA) online. Once you establish your chosen pathway, your new administrative umbrella automatically requests your child's records, seamlessly unenrolling them for you. No awkward meetings with the principal required. We even created a simple guide to walk you through exactly how this works!

  • You are already one step ahead! Because Blue Horizon Studio operates as a daytime workspace, your current legal setup fits perfectly. You simply keep your child enrolled in your existing charter or maintain your private affidavit. But now, you get to offload the hardest parts of homeschooling to us. You use our space, our daily rhythm, and our Expert Mentors to handle the day-to-day teaching, so you can go back to just being a parent instead of playing 'Principal' at the kitchen table.

  • Both paths work perfectly with our program, and the choice simply comes down to whether you prefer total independence or access to state funding. Because Blue Horizon Studio is a boutique learning workspace rather than a traditional school, you maintain the legal status of a homeschooler.

Here is a straightforward breakdown of the two options:

Option 1: The Public Charter Pathway

    • How it works: You enroll your child in a non-classroom-based public charter school.

    • The Benefit: The charter school provides an instructional fund that can be used to pay for your child's curriculum and can often be applied directly to your Blue Horizon Studio tuition.

    • The Trade-off: Because it is a public school, your child will need to participate in standard state testing, and you will have a brief monthly check-in with a charter teacher. (Do not worry—since we handle the daily work in the studio, we help you gather the work samples you need for these meetings).

Option 2: The Independent Private Pathway (Filing a PSA)

    • How it works: You file a Private School Affidavit (PSA) with the state of California, legally establishing your home as an independent private school.

    • The Benefit: Total freedom. You have 100% control over the schedule, there is no mandatory state testing, and you do not report to anyone outside of your family.

    • The Trade-off: You will pay for your digital curriculum and your studio tuition entirely out of pocket, as there is no state funding provided.

How to Decide: If your primary goal is to offset the cost of tuition and you do not mind minimal state oversight, the Charter Pathway is an excellent choice. If you want absolute autonomy over your child's education without any state testing, the Independent Pathway is the right fit.

If you are still unsure, download our quick-start Charter & Private Pathways Guide to review the exact steps for both options. Once you choose your path, our expert-led team takes over the daily execution so you get your evenings back.

  • If you choose to work with a charter school, you will have the help of a specialist within the charter program who will guide you in selecting programs for your child.

Staff and Experts

  • Danielle Kendle, M.A., is an 18-year veteran public school educator, former middle school science department chair, and local resident. She holds a Master’s degree and a California school administrator’s credential.

  • After nearly two decades inside the traditional system, Danielle saw a broken pattern: capable students were falling through the cracks, and families were exhausted by the second shift of nightly homework battles. She created Blue Horizon Studio as the Third Way. It is an environment built on the Done Guarantee—where 100% of the academic work is finished within our walls so you can go back to just being a family at night.

  • Instead of a traditional teacher lecturing at a whiteboard to 35 kids, our students are mentored by an Expert in Residence. For our Fall 2026 founding cohort, this role is filled by a retired veteran educator with 35 years of hands-on experience. Rather than forcing kids through rigid, standardized pacing guides, they bring decades of real-world mastery to the studio. They guide students through hands-on 'Big Builds' and help them tackle curiosity-driven 'Big Questions.' As we grow, this residency will rotate to include other local professionals—like engineers and scientists—ensuring your child is always mentored by someone with genuine, real-world expertise.
